Sunday afternoon consisted of the vetting of the bitches. Two of them did not pass.

The 2008 Canadian National Amateur Retriever Championship kicked off with a banquet at the Carol Community Hall in Carroll, Manitoba on Sunday evening.

The head table was piped in for the start of the evening. After the MC, Marty Zdan, introduced everyone, the National Anthems of the United States of America and Canada were played. Leading everyone in the singing of the anthems was Gerry Burmaster. Scotty Gillespie proposed the toast to the Queen followed by a toast to the office of the President United States of America given by Liz Jerome. Al Petkau said grace before everyone enjoyed an excellent meal. The dinner was prepared by Plaza Deli, from Souris, Manitoba.

Garry Taylor , President of the NRCC, gave his welcoming address. Nestle Purina rep, Tim Crone, and Eukanuba rep, John Sharpe, were introduced and presented with National pins and thanked for their support and sponsorship. Winchester Arms and Tri-Tronics were also recognized for their support of the National. Marg Murray, secretary of NRCC assisted Garry Taylor in presenting the judges, Ken Crosby, Jim Ling and Graham Bowman with their judge’s pins. Jim Ling spoke on behalf of the judges, wishing everyone well in the trial.

Dawne McKenzie , president of the host club, the Brandon Retriever Club, and welcomed all competitors and guests. Marshal, Ron MacKenzie, gave the marshal’s instructions and the fun began.

Our good friend and Nestle Purina rep, Les Oakes was wished a speedy recovery many times during the ceremonies.

There were 46 dogs entered in the competition, with 3 dogs having to be scratched. The starting dog is Dog # 22 FTCH AFTCH PILKINGTONS CASPER OF MT. GRANITE owned/handled by Gerry Burmaster.

A lively Calcutta handled by Norm Elder followed the introduction of the dogs and their handlers. The evening ended with everyone looking forward to the coming week’s competition.

Test 1 -- Land Triple

Because the first test was just behind the campground, there was no need for a caravan this morning. Activities started early around the campground. The sky had broken clouds, the temperature was 13 degrees Celsius and the wind was out of the west at 17 km/hr. It remained relatively constant throughout the morning. There were a few sprinkles of rain during the morning but nothing of much consequence.

Dawne McKenzie welcomed everyone to the Canadian Amateur National Championship and then called for the honorary test dog. Joe Leptick and his dog NAFTCH FTCH RAINDANCER'S LONESOME DOVE were called to the line as honorary test dog. This pair won the Canadian National in 1997. Dovie is just shy of her 15 birthday.

The marshal called the contestants to the line where they had a very picturesque triple set up facing to the north.

The first test dog, RAINBOW’S BLUE M & M’S, black lab male with owner/handler Al Petkau was called to the line at 7:50 AM. He rolled on the side hill of the retired memory bird and did an able job on the two visible birds. The second test dog GUNSTOCKS’ COTTON GINNY owned/handled by P. J. Fitzpatrick, yellow lab female were called to the line at 8:00 AM. She also had a hunt on the retired memory bird. The first running dog FTCH AFTCH PILKINGTONS CASPER OF MT. GRANITE was called to the line at 8:10 AM.

Test 1 - Left Birds

Test 1 - Right Bird

The test was a triple shot from right to left with the right hand bird retired. It was a mallard hen thrown left to right a distance of 153 yards. The center bird at 107 yards was a drake mallard thrown from right to left. The left hand go bird at 165 yards was a cock pheasant thrown right to left. The center bird was thrown into cover which resulted in a few short hunts. The roll of the terrain caused a few large hunts on the retired right hand bird.

The dogs were capably announced by Annette Leptick and assisted by Elsie Baker. The first test was sponsored by Nutro Products Inc.

Callbacks: All dogs were called back to test #2 which would commence after a ½ hour lunch break.

The marshal announced that dog #31 AFC MOONSTONES HUG AND MOOCHIE would be the first dog to run test two, a double land blind.

Test 2 -- Double Land Blind

This test site was also sponsored by Nutro Products Inc.

Test 2

The land blinds were run in the same area as test #1, by moving the line to the left. The first blind was a duck at 55 yards placed in front of a hay bale. The second blind was to the right of the short blind. It was a pheasant planted 179 yards from the line.

The male test dog, RAINBOW’S BLUE M&M’S, with owner/handler Al Petkau started the blind at 1:18 PM. The wind was from the north but didn’t seem to be blowing very strong. The female test dog, GUNSTOCK’S COTTON GINNY with P. J. Fitzpatrick ran next. Both test dogs did good jobs with some challenges on the longer blind.

All the running dogs performed very good work on these blinds.

Callbacks: All dogs are called back for Test #3 Tuesday morning. The marshal announced test #3 will be a water triple. The starting dog will be dog #41 FTCH AFTCH REVILO’S CUTTING EDGE with owner/handler Marg Murray. The test will begin at 7:30 AM on grounds #1.

Test 3 -- Water Triple with an Honour

The cavalcade left the campground at 7:05 AM for the 9 km trip to Grounds #1. The sky was clear, the temperature was 13 degrees Celsius and the wind from the NW was at 10/15 km/hr. This test site was sponsored by CANADIAN TIRE.

The judges had a water triple with one retired gun set up. The first test dog, RAINBOW’S BLUE M & M’S handled by AL PETKAU ran at 7:50 AM and had a challenge on the centre and right birds. P.J. FITZPATRICK with GUNSTOCK’S COTTON GINNY, female test dog came to the line and she did an excellent job.

Test 3

The triple was shot centre bird, at 218 yards, first; right bird at 132 yards, second and the left bird at 125 yards, third. The centre and right birds were drake mallards while the left bird was a hen mallard. The centre bird was retired and thrown into the water at the toe of a dike with heavy cattails behind. The honour was on a mat to the right of the running dog.

Dog #40 FTCH AFTCH FC AFC MISS T MH with owner/handler PETE PLOURDE came to line at 8:30 AM and the test began. A large majority of dogs had trouble with the centre retired bird and the anxiety set in for the handlers waiting to run. The wind increased somewhat during the afternoon but did not change the challenge on the centre bird as a number of dogs went through the cattails and hunted long, while some got back into the area of the left hand bird.

There were only a few dogs that completed the test without trouble. The dogs were averaging 15 minutes to complete this test.

The evening ended with a great supper provided by the Manitoba Gun Dog Association and the Winnipeg Field Trial Club. We thoroughly enjoyed a turkey dinner with all the trimming. We also were able to enjoy the company of our fellow trialers.

CALLBACKS: Numbers 9, 21, 27, 34, 39 were dropped after this test. The marshal announced that dog # 3, POKOLODI’S GO GO SALLY would be the starting dog to run Test#4.

Test 4 -- Water Blind

TEST SITE IS SPONSORED BY KELLEHER FORD SALES. We do thank them for their support and for supplying the judge’s vehicle.

The cavalcade arrived at the test site at grounds #1 at 7:30 AM. The wind was light from the SE, the sky was heavy overcast and the temperature 14 Celsius.

Test 4

The judges had a water blind set up. The running mat was back from the water’s edge by about 7 yards. The line went through a small piece of water and over a point at approx. 15 yards. The line then carried to the next point at 70 yards, past this point the line carried to a third point at 160 yards, and past this for aprox 50 yards to the bird which was planted at the edge of the water. The total distance of the blind was 211 yards. The first test dog ran at 8:00 AM. RAINBOW’S BLUE M & M’S handled by AL PETKAU displayed some of the challenges of the points and the lunging water. The judges made some minor changes to the location of both the bird and running mat placement and GUNSTOCK’S COTTON GINNY handled by P.J. FITZPATICK ran the second test dog. She did a very good job. Further adjustments were made and the first competitor, dog # 3 POKOLODI’S GO GO SALLY handled by BOBBY LINDSAY came to the line at 8:25AM.

There was some excellent work displayed by the teams on the blind. As well, some dogs were pushed toward the shore and were challenged by the casts into the wind. There was one pick up. The average time to complete the blind was 6 minutes. The wind shifted and came out of the east and increased to approx. 25 kmph at times. At around 10:30 a rain squall came through and people were scrambling for rain suits and umbrellas, fortunately it did not last long.

The last dog picked up the blind at 12:20 pm and it was confirmed that this would be the only test of the day. People could now rest and prepare for the workers’ party, which will be posted tomorrow.

CALLBACKS: Numbers 6, 36, 43 and 45 were dropped, 34 dogs remain in the competition. The marshal announced that dog #13 would be the starting dog to run test five.

Worker's Party

After today’s test, contestants and workers enjoyed a leisurely afternoon preparing for the Workers’ Party sponsored by Brandon Retriever Club. The chairperson, Dawne McKenzie, opened the ceremonies by thanking Nestle Purina, the official Dog Food Supplier for the NRCC, and their reps. Tim Crone and Lauralee Camilleri. Their support for the 2008 National Amateur is much appreciated and crucial to the continued success of the National Retriever Club. She also acknowledged Eukanuba, another Official Major Sponsor of the NRCC and thanked John Sharpe for their involvement with the trial. Everyone is appreciative of all the hard work that Tim and John have done this week. They have been out in the field taking turns with the gunning and throwing in addition to their own preparations. Dawne also thanked Tri-Tronics, the official e-collar supplier to the National. Another special thank you went to Winchester, the official ammunition supplier to the NRCC for their poppers. She also thanked the many local suppliers and all the people who have worked so diligently for many months to make this National the success that it is.

The contestants and workers enjoyed a meal sponsored by the Brandon Retriever Club and MapleLeaf Foods which was catered by Butchers Kitchen. The Brandon Retriever Club is celebrating its 50 th year as a club and they had a huge birthday cake to share with everyone.

The Silent Auction ended tonight at the Workers’ Party. Bidding was brisk thought out the evening, as Chuck Lapensee, President of the Brandon Retriever Club, kept things moving along by pulling items throughout the evening. AL Petkau, Finance Chairman, had no problem keeping up with the pile of bidding sheets that Chuck was gathering for him.

The Brandon Retriever Club, competitors and workers would like to thank ROGER EBBERT for arranging the water tank which was delivered by CFB SHILO. CFB Shilo was very cooperative and members were dispatched to fill the tank as soon as they were notified that it was empty.

The competitors and workers enjoyed themselves with a dummy toss competition after the meal and presentations. There was lots of laughter as the teams attempted to toss a dummy into a garbage can. At one point, someone asked if being close to the can could count like in horseshoes or hand grenades.

Test 5 -- Land Triple

Today’s test sites are sponsored by Maple Leaf Foods. We thank them for their support.

When the competitors and workers woke this morning, they were relieved to realize that the fog wasn’t just from last night’s activities. There was a very thick fog that delayed the start of the test.

Purina sponsored a breakfast for the competitors and workers. They enjoyed pancakes, sausages and coffee prepared by the lunch wagon.

The caravan left the campground at 9:15 AM. The sky was overcast and there was still some fog. The wind was light out of the west.

The judges had a land triple set up but reduced visibility was affecting the test so badly that it had to be scrapped. It had started to rain at 10:30 AM.

The new test was also a land triple with an honour. They moved the test to a piece of club land directly to the north of the 1 st set up.

Test 5

The test was a stand-up in-line triple shot left to right. The right bird, a drake mallard was thrown left to right into buck brush at 250 yards. The center bird a hen mallard was thrown right to left at 220 yards. The line to this bird was also through buck brush. The right hand go bird was a hen mallard thrown right to left into heavier cover at 125 yards. The terrain had considerable roll and was bowl shaped. The honour was to the left of the running mat.

Tests 5 & 6

The male test dog, TOUCH OF CLASShandled by Neil Hunter came to the line at 12:20 PM and had a hunt on the left bird. GUNSTOCK’S COTTON GINNY handled by P.J. Fitzpatrick was the female test dog. She had to be picked up. They had a 3 rd test dog, FTCH AFTCH FIFTH AVENUE’S ROCKIN’ REBA (female) handled by Marlene Benn. Shehooked the center and left gun stations but came up with the birds quickly. The first running dog, #23 AFC FTCH AFTCH JAZZIME LAST CHANCE V PEKISKO handled by Larry Calvert came to the line at 1:45PM by this time the rain had ended.

CALLBACKS: Three dogs were dropped, #1, #13 and #25. The marshal announced that Test #6 would be run in the immediate vicinity and that dog #32 would be the first dog to run.

Test 6 -- Land Blind

Test 6

The line was moved about 80 yards to the east for a single land blind at 282 yards. To the right of the line at 133 yards were 2 gunners who threw a poison bird to the right, away from the line. The blind was planted about 3 feet behind a bale.

#1 test dog, FTCHAFTCH FIFTH AVENUE’S ROCKIN’ REBA (female) handled by Marlene Benn came to the line at 5:00 PM. She could not complete the blind as the dog quickly got out of sight. #2 test dog, TOUCH OF CLASS (male) handled by Neil Hunter also had difficulty but managed to complete the blind.

#3 test dog, GUNSTOCK’S COTTON GINNY(female) handled by P.J. Fitzpatrick got out of sight and could not complete the blind.

The judges decided to remove the poison bird and they proceeded with the blind. The rolling terrain provided many opportunities for the dogs to get out of sight.

The first competing dog, #32 FTCH AFTCH GUNSTOCK’S MACGREGOR OF STONEOAK handled by Charlie Perkins started the blind at 5:20 PM. By this time the sky had cleared somewhat and the temperature rose along with the humidity. The work was generally pretty good on the blind, but unfortunately, there were a few pick ups. Last competing dog finished at 7:00PM.

CALLBACKS: Dogs 3,4,5,7,8,10,12,14,17,18,20,22,23,24,26,29,30,31,32,33,35,37,40,41 and 42 were called back for Test 7 which will be Water Triple at Grounds 1 with the caravan leaving at 7:30 AM.

Test 7 -- Water Triple

Today’s test site is sponsored by C & C Rentals. We want to thank them for providing the National with a Polaris – Ranger. The marshals have appreciated the use of this ATV.

The caravan left the campground, following Garry Genaille, the Traffic Chairman, at 7:30 AM to Grounds #1 for the water triple. By the time we left, the light fog had lifted. There was a very light breeze out of the east, the sky was clear and the temperature was 10 degrees Celsius with a forecast of 23.

Purina sponsored a breakfast for the competitors and workers again this morning. Everyone was treated to pancakes, sausages and coffee prepared by the lunch wagon.

Test 7

The seventh test was a water triple. The triple was set up with the running mat on a knoll. The left go bird was a hen mallard thrown left to right at 165 yards, landing with a splash. The centre, second bird, a drake mallard, was at 245 yards on a side hill thrown left to right. The memory bird, a drake mallard, on the right was thrown left to right at 274 yards. This bird also landed with a splash. The gunners for the memory bird were retired. The dogs had to traverse a body of water with an island on the line to the second, middle bird. The memory bird was through a body of water about 50 yards from the line, then over a berm of land approximately 20 yards wide and finally down a long piece of water with an angle shore on their left.

The first test dog, FTCH WIN-TOBA’S TWIST OF FAITH (female) handled by Gail Komadoski ran at 8:20AM. Lottie had to handle on the centre bird and then did a good job on the memory bird. She took 15 minutes to complete the test. The second test dog was PILKINGTON’S POWER STRUGGLE (male) handled by Jill Richardson. This dog had a small hunt on the centre bird, exiting the water left of the line, but, was able to recover quickly.

The first competing dog was #41 FTCH AFTCH REVILO’S CUTTING EDGE handled by Marg Murray. Hecame to line at 9:00 AM.

Test 7 concluded at 3:10 PM.

Callbacks: Dogs called back after this test were 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 14, 17, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 37, 40, 42

The marshal announced that dog # 12 FTCH AFTCH OTTERCREEK’S GRYPHON handled by Larry Baker would be the starting dog for the eighth test.

Test 8 -- Water Blind w/ Dry Pop

At 4:10 PM, the caravan departed for Grounds #2, a short 4 mile drive.

Test 8

The judges had a water blind set up at 300 yards. To the right along the shore were 2 gunners who fired a double dry pop. There were 3 points on the line to the blind. The blind was planted approximately 50 yards past the far shore. There was a stand of trees just to the left of the line on the far shore that created problems for some handlers. The blind was run towards the SE and the wind at approximately 10 km/hr was from the east and then switched to the south east.

The first test dog, FTCH AFTCH ABACO’S ESPRIT GOOMBAY SMASH MH (male) handled by Jim Liviskie came to line at 4:10 PM. The second test dog was GUNSTOCK’S COTTON GINNY (female) handled by P.J. FITZPATRICK. The third test dog was PILKINGTON’S POWER STRUGGLE (male) handled by Jill Richardson. The test was taking approximately 7 minutes per dog. The test dogs displayed many of the pitfalls to be found on this blind.

The first competing dog was #12 FTCH AFTCH OTTERCREEK’S GRYPHON handled by Larry Baker. He came to line at 4:45 PM. There were some very good work on the blind, but it appeared that a number of the dogs had difficulty picking out the handlers. Unfortunately, some dogs were lost on the far shore behind the stand of tree.

The last running dog completed the test at 7:15 PM.

Contestants and workers enjoyed a great fish fry dinner sponsored/ supplied by the PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE RETRIEVER CLUB.

Winchester

Test 9 -- Land Quad

There was no caravan this morning as Test #9 was run right from the campground on grounds #3. But, the ground was quite slick with the rain so people just drove down the hill rather than risk slipping as they went down the grassy hill to the test sight. The sky had opened up overnight and it just rained, rained and rained! The wind was from N at 20 km/hr. The temperature was 13 degrees Celsius.

The competitors and workers want to thank Nestle Purina for supplying breakfast again today. They have been generous for the past three days. The last two days have been pancakes, sausages and coffee. Today was egg /ham sandwiches and hash browns. They were really appreciated with the cool weather and the rain.

Test 9

The land quad had three guns along a tree line and a 4 th left of the line. The first bird down was the centre of the three along the tree line. This was a hen mallard at 225 yards, retired, thrown left to right. The next bird shot was the long bird at 291 yards. These gunners stayed out. The bird was thrown right to left. The third right hand bird along the bush line was a drake mallard thrown right to left at 138 yards. These gunners retired. The go bird was a swing to the left at 121 yards. It was a cock pheasant thrown left to right.

The first test dog was FTCH AFTCH GMH CLUBMEAD’S AUTUMN BREEZE CDX (female) handled by Sue Taylor. They came to the line at 8:30 AM. The second test dog was PILKINGTON’S POWER STRUGGLE (male) handled by Jill Richardson. After these test dogs had run, the judges decided to change the order of the test. The long bird was retired instead of the center gun.

The second set of test dogs came to the line. The first test dog was WIN-TOBA’S TWIST OF FATE (female) handled by Gail Komadoski. They ran at 9:15 AM. The second test dog was TOUCH OF CLASS (male) handled by Neil Hunter.

The first competing dog #26 FC FTCH AFTCH L & L BLACK TIE AFFAIR handled by Howard Simson came to the line at 9:30 AM. This test had its challenges. There were 4 handles and 2 pick ups by the time it was finished. The rain continued to fall, at some times quite heavily.

The last dog finished the test at 11:55 AM.

CALLBACKS: The dogs called back to the 10 th test were 3,4,5,8,12,18,22,23,26,31,33,37,40, and 42. The marshal announced that dog # 37 would be the starting dog.

Test 10 - Water Quad

The dogs and their handlers were announced by Elsie Baker for this final test.

Although the skies were threatening this afternoon, the rain held off for the final test. The caravan went to grounds #2 for the final test, a water quad.

Test 10

Three gunners were in a line toward the right to middle of the interconnecting ponds. The first bird down was a mallard hen thrown from left to right on top of a mound. This gun station was the longest at 360 yards. After it was shot, these gunners retired behind a very well brushed out holding blind. The line to this bird involved 5 water entries and exits. The second bird down at 266 yards was the middle bird of the three in line. It was a mallard drake thrown from right to left, thrown across a channel of water and tight converged on the first bird down. It had a splash. The line to this bird involved 3 water entries and exits. This set of guns retired into a well brushed out holding blind after the dog was sent for the go bird. The third bird down at 149 yards was the shortest of the inline and was a mallard hen thrown from right to left. These gunners remained visible. This bird required only one water entry through weedy patches that the dogs struggled to swim through. This bird landed on land behind a thin line of cattails. The go bird at 214 yards was to the far left and was thrown from left to right by a hay bale behind a narrow channel at the corner of a pond. The end of the fall appeared from the running mat to be behind a mound in front and to the right of this gun station.

The first test dog was a female, HRCH L & L FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK owned and handled by Lee Woodhouse. She had an excellent go bird, very good right bird, pushed to the right going across the water, splitting the difference between the right and centre gun of the in line. She was handled to the middle retired. When sent for the long retired, she went back to the centre retired and was again handled.

The second test dog was a male FTCH AFTCH GUNSTOCKS MACGREGOR OF STONEOAK owned and handled by Charlie Perkins. Max did a very good job on the test.

Of the 14 dogs called back to the last series, 7 handled on 1 bird, 3 handled on 2 birds, 2 were picked up and 2 dogs did a very creditable job on the test, but had had previous handles. The gallery felt that these ponds were possessed.
