Banquet - Head Table

Welcome to the 2007 Canadian National Open Retriever Championship Stake in Iron Bridge, Ontario. Hosted by the Northern Ontario Retriever Association. Pre-trial training has been great with beautiful areas provided for training sites.

A NRCC Directors Meeting was held at 10am followed by the AGM meeting at 12:30 pm. Many issues were discussed. A rule change was ratified that affects the running of this trial so I will report on that issue. Handlers may leave the trial site after viewing the test. In addition to this change “Guidelines for Ethical Training at Nationals” was adopted. There are several areas the guidelines cover but the one specific to the new rule change is as follows.

1. As much training may be done as required BEFORE ENTERING the trial grounds or AFTER running a test. NO TRAINING may be done after observing a test until after you have run.

Vetting of the bitches was held from 3 to 4 pm at Headquarters.

Pre-trial scratches were dogs #4 & #5.

Now for the fun, pre-banquet cocktails began at 4:30pm with the formal banquet beginning with the head table being piped in at 5:30pm. FTR Chairman Gerry Burmaster led everyone in the singing of the US & Canadian National Anthems. He did such a wonderful job he is now hired for life to do this at every National!

Dinner was a wonderful buffet of roast beef & chicken and then Master of Ceremonies Richard Dresser guided us through the formal welcoming speeches and thanked the Sponsor’s, Workers. Gerry Burmaster, NRCC President, presented pins and thanked the Major sponsors and retiring NRCC Directors. The judges were given their gifts and left the banquet.

Dave & Jane Thompson ran the Calcutta. As always Dave did a great job in encouraging everyone to lighten their pocket books. As each dog was called the handler  received gifts of hats, jackets, bibs, bags and dog food provided by our major sponsors Purina, Eukanuba, Tri-Tronics and Winchester.

At the end of the Calcutta the starting dog’s number was drawn, Dog # 40 and the party wound up at 10pm.

Test 1 & 2: Land Triple with Blind

The caravan left Headquarters on schedule at 7am and proceeded to the test site. The Judges and the FT Committee had everything set and ready to go upon the caravan’s arrival. The sky was overcast with sunny breaks and 16 degree’s that remained the case throughout the day. Winds started out at about 5km per hour out of the east switching to the SE by mi d-day and then NW by late afternoon.

The test site was a large gently rolling hay field, with a few scattered hay bales and the field was ringed by trees and varying degrees of cover.

Bird #1 – A long retired gun was situated in the far left hand corner (SE) of the field. A drake mallard was thrown to the RT. landing at the edge of the cover with cut brush surrounding it. Distance 252 yds.

Bird # 2 – A stand out gun was situated in the SW corner of the field. A hen mallard was thrown to the RT towards the tree line and landing in the cut field. Distance 240yds.

Bird # 3 - It was a stand out center bird with the gunner sitting in front of the cover and throwing a cock pheasant to the LT into the cover. Distance 176 yards.

The Blind – It was 240yds long; it went across the cut field and planted about 30 feet into light cover. It was situated about 75yds to the right of the center bird and about 60 yd’s deeper. A hen pheasant was used. There was a medium sized pine tree at about 125yd’s and about 30 feet to the right of the line to the blind just before the cover began. The tree and the cover provided a challenge end for some dogs.

Handlers were called to view the test at 7:45am. The Official test dogs are: Basil Eden Wild Mena – BLF, Owned & handled by Val Chappell and Goldenbriar’s Wailin Willie – Owned by Connie & Richard Dresser, handled by Connie Dresser.They both did good job on both the marks and the blind and the test took about 4-5 minutes a dog.The first running dog, , Dog # 40, was called to line at 8:17 am.

The series was a good opening to the 2007 National with most dogs getting the task done without too much difficulty. At the end of the day 5 dogs were dropped #8, # 12, #40, #57 & #71. Starting dog for tomorrows water test is Dog # 54.

Test 3: Water Triple with Honor

The caravan left headquarters at 7am to proceed to the test grounds at the home of Reg Tivy. Upon arrival once again the judges were ready for us,thanks to the Marshalling crew headed by Chief Marshall Richard Dresser and his Assistant Jim Dorobek and Equipment Chairman Don Dupuis.

The weather today is overcast and cool 10 degrees. So far the rain gods have been good to us and hope that continues throughout the day. The wind is north but very gentle. We did end up having a light misty rain on and off.

The test grounds consisted of an L- shaped pond, with a point and a small island, a small swim by pond situated inside the L. The ponds are surrounded by small hills and mounds with scattered cover & small birch & pine trees. A dirt road ran parallel to the line about 20 feet out.

Bird #1 – Long centre mark 245yd’s with stand out gunners throwing a drake mallard angled back to the left. The line to the bird was across the road and into the pond for a short swim then up on land and back 175 yd's.

Bird # 2 – Left hand bird was a distance of 149yd’s and a drake mallard was thrown to the right landing on the slope of a hill in cover, These gunners retired behind a fir tree. The line to this bird was an angled line across the road into the pond, then continuing the angle over the point into the pond over the island to the shore & up the embankment to the bird.

Bird # 3 – The go bird was to the right side of the test and a hen mallard was thrown to the left from the base of a large mound to the top. The distance for this mark was 112yd’s. The line to this bird was again an angle across the road into the pond up trough some cover into the swim by pond and up to the top of the pond.

There were 3 decoys placed to the left of the running line to the retired gun. Honor – It was placed to the left of the running dog. The test was run from north to south.

The Official test dogs began at 7:30 with GRM, This dog handled on both the Lt. Retired & the long center bird. The second test dog BLF did a great job. The first running dog # 54 started at 8am and the test seems to vary between 8-10 minutes in duration.

Special mention needs to be made to Howard Simson the Game Steward who carefully has hand dried each bird in all series to date. He obviously has developed a relationship with his charges and has promised them the best care possible.

This test was challenging with many dogs being drawn to the long standout gun when they were sent for the short retired and even occasionally when sent for the go bird. There were 15 dogs handled, 2 dogs were picked up and there were some switches.

Dogs Dropped in the Third Series: # 15, 27, 47, 50, 55, 56, 61, and 68. There will be 56 dogs returning to the 4 th series and the starting dog will be Dog # 1.

Eukanuba / Iam’s Karaoke Party - Monday Evening September 10th  
After long day at the trial grounds everyone enjoyed some social camaraderie.  

The devil takes over all of us when the songs we hold near & dear to our hearts come on and we have an ability to pretend stardom. That was certainly the case this evening, as everyone joined in the fun. Forget Canadian Idol, we have discovered new star talent in the Field Trial World. Kevin Cheff & Howard Simpson, Linda Shlemkevich, Richard Dresser, Val Chappell, Andrea Smith, Bill Kennedy, Jerry Younglove and our host John Sharp ( Eukanuba / Iams) will be going on tour and be visiting a town near you soon!! They will be bringing along with their backup singers Diana Howard, Jane & Dave Thompson, Judy Peter Mottola, Connie Dresser, Lynne Hare, Marg Murray, Navajoe Katie Dygos, Barb Younglove, Marty Kress, Lise Langlois. Also on tour will be our groupies Paul & Alma Lalley, Fred Benjaminson, Leona & Ron Modesto & Jim & Meg Liviski. Our judges Rick Cardinal, Chuck Lapansee & Gord Benn stayed out of the limelight but enjoyed the festivities stating they had been in the limelight all day!! Great snacks and fun were enjoyed by all.

Test 4 - Water Blind

There was no caravan this AM. The test site was again located on the property of Reg and Marg. Tivy. The weather was cool (10C) with overcast skies and rolling ground fog, with the wind out of the NW and very light. As the day progressed the sun came out around 10am and the fog disappeared. The winds switched from light NW to NE about 5km/hr around 10am and to the SE at about 10km/hr by noon. Rain descended on us at about 2:30 when there were about 10 or so dogs to run.

Test 4

The test ran south to north and the starting line was on the dike and using a pond on the opposite side of the dike from yesterday’s Water triple. The line was located about 10 ft from the road over the dike. It was a beautiful big pond with islands and points and surrounded by nice tulles and low cover. The blind ran along the west side of the pond incorporating the 3 points along that side and ended about 20yds up a gentle slope at the north west end of the pond. There was a small pine directly on line to the water entry. The line to the blind was over the road, down a lightly covered slope, thru some tulles at the waters edge. Then across a little bay to about halfway down the first point. Then over the point and staying in the water past the other 2 points to the end of the pond and up to the bird.

The Official test dogs ran at 7:30am and Connie & Val did a great job handling to show the handlers the pitfalls of the blind. The first running dog, Dog #1 started at 8:20am after a short fog delay. Visibility was OK but not great and we had a few delays between dogs as the fog would roll in & out. That seemed to clear after about 8 dogs had run. The work was general good and consistent.

Dogs dropped from the 4th series were Dogs # 6, 36, 38, 43, 54 and the starting dog will be dog # 18.

Test 5 - Land Triple

The caravan left headquarters at 7:30am for a scheduled 8:30am start. The test grounds were located on the property of Howard Simson & Elise Langlois. Upon arrival at the test site at 7:45 everyone was informed to return in 1 hour, start time would be 9:30am. As the test was east facing the judges wanted to delay until visibility was better.

The day began sunny about 12C, the wind was NW at about 10km/hr. Clouds arrived around noon and the wind increased to about 25km, as the afternoon progressed we had a few sprinkles of rain mixed with sun and the wind had changed to the west.

The test site was a very large rolling hay field, lightly scattered with hay bales and strips of uncut cover.

The Test – Land Triple with 2 retired guns.The test was originally set up as a quad but that was changed after the test dogs ran. Bird # 1 – Long center retired gun at 307 yd’s. It was a drake mallard was thrown to right from the side of a hill to a small valley filled with cover. They retired as soon as the second gun went off.Bird # 2 - This was a retired gun placed at 226 yd’s quite wide left of the center bird. It was a drake mallard thrown to the right behind a strip of cover.Bird # 3 - The go bird was at 203 yd’s, thrown to the left landing on open field it was a hen mallard. This mark was to the right of the center bird on the other side of the valley.

The official test dogs began running at 10:02. They ran the original quad test which had a standout gun located to the left of the left retired gun and was thrown 3 rd. The GRM ran first and had difficulty with the center retired and had to handle. The BLF ran next and had a good job.The judges decided to reduce the test to a triple, eliminating the far left standout gun. The first running dog # 18 started at 10:31am and the triple was about 7-8 minutes a dog

There were 3 dogs picked up, 7 handles. The test seemed to become more difficult when the wind changed to the west. The center bird was where most problems occurred as earlier dogs were getting wind saves.

Dogs dropped after the 5 th series were # 9, 25, 29, 31, 34, 49, 51, 52, 59, 64, 67. Dog starting the 6th series is dog #

Test 6 - Water Triple

We woke to a clear cold morning it was 3C. The caravan left headquarters at 7am to proceed to the test site. 

The pond for the 6 the test was a large oval beaver pond riddled with tulles and grass islands, lily pads and floating muskeg islands. It was ringed by forest and a high ridge at the SE end. The winds started out light from the NE and as the day progress by late morning had switched to the SE about 20 – km/hr with gusts of 40km per hour. Our clear day turned into a mixture of sun & cloud. There was good visibility all day for the marks,

The test – Water Triple with one retired center gun. Bird # 1 – Center retired at 139 yd’s. A drake mallard was thrown to the left (a huge throw) from a beaver dam across a stripe of land into a little bay. You were unable to see the dog pick up the bird. Bird # 2 - This bird was to the LT. at 164 yd’s, across a channel to a stripe land/ muskeg. A drake mallard was thrown to the left and the sat down in their boat. This gun was retired originally for the test dogs. As a stand out gun it became quite a draw resulting in switches and handles. Bird # 3 – This was a short stand out Go bird at 34 yd’s and thrown from a boat to the left and landed amongst a cluster of grass & tulle islands directly in front of the line. This bird was 59 yd’s when the test dogs ran.

The Official Test Dogs ran at 8:05am. They ran the test as a double retired and both ran into difficulties. I will take this opportunity to thank and commend the great job Val Chappell & Connie Dresser have done handling the Official Test Dogs. The first running dog # 28 started at 8:57. The gallery enjoyed a wonderful breakfast sponsored by Purina.

The test produced a variety of work from excellent on down and many answers were provided to the judges on both long birds. The test was not finished at the end of running light and 5 dogs will be run tomorrow morning. There were no partial callbacks to be done.

At the end of today’s work there were 13 handles. The terrain of the pond made this a difficult task.

Friday AM - Continuation of the 6th Test

There were 5 dogs remaining to be run in the Water Triple. Test dogs were run at 7:50am with the first running dog, Dog # 21 at 8:15. There were three dogs handle this am. Dogs dropped in the 6 th # 17, 18, 26, 28, 41, 42, 48, 62, 66, and 70.

(PLEASE NOTE; I forgot # 41 ) There will be 30 dogs returning for the 7 th test.

Test 7 - Double Land Blind with Dry Pop

The weather had changed by mid morning and we had a mixture of sun & cloud with winds out of the NW at 20km per hour.

The test site was 27 km from the last test but as usual the setup and Marshalling committee had everything ready to go upon arrival. The field was outstanding and huge. Beautiful rolling hills covered in a mixture of short grass, medium areas of cover composed of ferns, clumps of small bushes and evergreens.

There were 2 binds and handlers were instructed to pick up the rt. hand short blind first and then the long blind. The line was situated at the top of an embankment that sloped down at a steep to moderate pitch where the terrain then flattened out. A dry shot at the beginning of the test. The test ran from NE to SW.

Short Blind - It was angled down the embankment to the left. The embankment was covered in ferns and sprinkled in small pines and trees. The land then leveled out to short grass and the bird, a hen pheasant was placed in front of a small fir tree at a distance of 122 yds.

Long blind: Was straight down the embankment thru the cover (there was a couple bushes about 20 yd's out, on line to the blind). Then down onto the flats past the gunner who fired the dry shot. He was located about 25ft to the rt. of the line and 78 yd’s from the start of the blind. There were several strips of low cover until the entered the low cover about 70 yd's from the bird. The bird was planted in the low cover in front of a clump of trees & bushes, it was a drake pheasant. The distance of the blind was 287 yds.

Test Dogs: There were 3 test dogs run staring at 11am. They were the official test dogs and Mr. Greg MacInnes and his dog # 62, Moira River Maddy. When they ran the test had a poison bird thrown by the gunner landing close to the line and under the arch of the long blind and to the right of the short blind. All 3 test dogs did a fine job of retrieving that bird. The test was then changed to a dry shot. The first running dog started at 11:30am. There were a variety of jobs done on both the long & short blind.

Dogs dropped after the 7 th series were # 3, 14, 16, 24, 30, 33, and 37. There will be 23 dogs proceeding to the 8 th series.

Test 8 - Land Quad with Two Retired Guns

Terrain remained the same. I can’t say enough what a beautiful field this was! The test was facing south and the wind had increased to about 35m/per hour. It got quite cold (felt like it would snow) we had a few brief periods of rain showers.

The line was located at the top of a ridge with a gentle slope down into a gently rolling valley and backup some small hills at the end of the field. There were a few times the dogs disappeared from site going over a knoll but just for a brief time and the situation of the line provided the handlers with excellent visibility to handle if need be.
The Test:

Bird # 1 – was located in the rt. center of the field at 341 yd’s, It was a cock pheasant thrown angled back into some of the fern cover at the top of a hill. It was thrown to the Lt. Bird # 2 – Was located on a hill in the LT centre part of the field, up on a hill. The mark was thrown at a distance of 311 yd’s from the top of the hill to the rt. down the hill in front of a clump of medium sized trees & bush. It was a cock pheasant and the hill was covered in ferns. Bird # 3 – Right hand retired gun situated in a small gap ringed by trees at 242 yd’s. A cock pheasant was thrown angled back to the left into short grass. Bird # 4 – The GO bird was situated to the left at 151 yd’s to the LT into a clump of cover backed by short trees. It was a hen pheasant.

Test dogs ran at 2:13 with the first test dog run by Val Chappell with the test as is. She handled on the centre retired bird. The second test dog ran the test with the right center bird also retired and had great difficulty. This dog was handled by Neil Hunter, Touch of Class and he had great difficulty as well as the third test dog, AFTCH Adam Acres Muddy Creek handled by Jerry Younglove and he also had great difficult. A decision was made to not retire bird #1.

The first running dog started at 2:55pm, dog # 60. It proved to be a very difficult test with 13 handles which included some double handles and a few pickups.

Dogs dropped after the 8 th were # 2, 13, 20, 23, 44, 46, 60, and 65. There are 15 dogs moving on to the 9 th series Water blind.

Well we have finally made it to the last day of the National. As usual tension always mounts on this day. Nature has provided us with a wonderful sunny day, cool but nice. The winds are out of the NW at 5 – 10 km/per hr. and switched to the west shortly after the blind began. There are 15 dogs back to the 9 th series water blind.

Test 9 - Water Blind with Poison Bird

The pond for the 9th & 10th series is huge & spectacular with many islands and points. The water blind was run from the north corner to mid way down the pond on the south side. The line was about 30 yd’s back from the water. The poison bird gunner was situated on the roadway of the dike throwing towards the north corner of the pond landing about 20 feet from the line of the blind where the dog needed to enter the water. The line to the blind was an angle across the dike to the corner of the pond past the poison bird, then angling across a narrow channel over a poit and re-entering for a big swim angled across the pond by an island on the right and then between an island on the left and a point on the right back to the bird on the far shore. The bird was a drake mallard and it was up on land about 20 feet from the shore line. The length of the blind 237 yds.

Test 9 - Water Blind

The Official Test Dogs began at 8:30am and both dogs did a good job on the blind once they picked up the poison bird. The first running dog, dog # 7 started at 9: 07 and the test was completed by 11: 10.

Most dogs did similar work and the poison bird did not present a problem. There was only one dog dropped dog # 35.

Test 10 - Water Quad with Two Retired Guns

Well it’s the moment we have been waiting for all week. The final test! There were 14 finalists, of these great dogs 5 dogs entered this test without a handle the rest had all handled in previous tests. Grace Burmaster did a wonderful job of announcing each competitor as they came to line.

Before I discuss the 10 th series I must commend the Marshalling team headed by Richard Dresser, the equipment team headed by Don Dupuis, Rob & Nancy Fraser, the Gun Captains and their fill in after Thursday Jane Thompson, Howard Simson the Game Steward and Art Roy for Traffic for being the best mechanical team I have ever seen. Reg Tivi for arranging/ seeking out and grooming the grounds we used. Sensational!! There couldn’t be a National without people from all parts of the country stepping up & willing to give 10 days + of there time to help the host club.

Once again I/we can’t thank our Major Sponsors Purina, Eukanuba, Tritronic’s and Winchester. Without there support clubs could not begin to think of hosting these trials and thank you to all the local companies that put the icing on the cake.

The 10th Series Test: - Water Quad with Two Retired Guns:

This was run on the same great pond as the 9 th series.The test was south facing with winds at about 20km/per hour from the west. The line was set about 25-30 yards back from the pond.

Bird # 1 – Situated in the LT. part of the pond at 369 yds, a drake mallard was thrown to he rt. and he gunners traveled to a natural blind set 150 ft. over from there throwing position. The line to the mark was an angle entry into he pond, over or skimming by the Lt. close island, down a channel between a point and an island up on shore back 100 yds to a drake mallard thrown behind brush.

Bird # 2: Center RT. retired gun situated on the crest of a hill on the south shore of the pond about 70 yards from the water. This was a drake mallard. Thrown from Rt. to Lt. into light cover. Distance of this mark was 224 yds. The dog needed to enter the water swim about 50 yards, go over a point and into the big water to the far shore.

Bird # 3 – Stand out bird at about 146 yds. The line was similar to the long LT center bird. A drake mallard was thrown from the end of a point landing on a island with medium cover at a distance of 146 yds.

Bird # 4 - The go bird was situated just to the Rt. of the line on a point, at 55 yds A hen mallard was thrown to the Rt.

A variety of work was seen but the far Lt retired proved to be the most difficult.

The Official Test dos started at 12:16 and both had to be handled.

The first running dog, Dog # 19 started at 1:15. and the test finished at about 6:30 with everyone returning to headquarters for the Purina Party to toast the Finalist and Winner.
