DAY EIGHT: Page two. After the tenth.
John and Rosey were on the way to the holding blind this AM when I caught up for an interview, so we got together after the ninth before he launched one momentous tenth. Rosey did really sweet work in the tenth.
John Russell with Rosey have amassed around 200 all age points. “She is all the dog you could ever ask to have.” John’s first national was in Stowe Vermont 19 years ago. He has run nationals with five dogs since. He has been a finalist 6 times in14 starts. Rosey has run 12 total nationals and been a finalist 8 times. She is trained by John, his lovely wife Martha, and Pat Burns and Mary Lake. She has roughly 22 points during this qualification period. She has three year old puppies on the ground, one of which John believes will “make it.” That one got a boost today. It is John and Martha’s.
The tenth: Surprise not a quad. No one could remember a NARC trial without a quad. 16 started. Two could not handle to the left hand mark in the deep sage = 14 finalist. Esther McCartney and Lee Jolley swore they would be back and were very proud to be in the top 16 of 105. No doubt 90 dogs would have been pleased to trade places with either of them.
Of the few who did not handle I liked number 53’s chances and suspect he finished a close second to a very popular winner. He will be back.
The post trial a party was at Si Bueno’s and bordered on as good as it gets. Rosey was not trained well to sit on a table and face the crowd, but she does parties at Mexican Restaurants as if she was born for it; petting, an occasional chip, everyone knows her name, and the tail never stopped wagging. John talked to her about the check but I am certain he did not convince her of the importance.
What a popular winner for a wonderful week. It is hard to imagine anyone going home without making plans to get back in route.
Tim got his green ribbon. The front range of Colorado did well with Ted and Glenn. The hunt test cross overs did well for themselves and the internet reporting reached new levels.
Glenda the Gruesome did ask me to thank everyone who helped. (Why am I not surprised that she would be the one). She was especially pleased by the hostess committee who provided a “a belt loosening experience with great eats all week.”
I’ll write more at the next one.
