Winchester, and Tri-Tronics
The final day has arrived. The nine finalists and their seven handlers are quietly confident and ready. The temperature this morning was 13 C and a slight drizzle was falling when we arose. Winds were light from the south west. Dogs #’s 8, 19, 25, 31, 34 and 46 have not handled on any marks to this series – it promises to be an exciting day!
The workers have again done an outstanding job of preparing the site and the test. The final series will run on the club’s 35 acre pond in Minto. FT Chairman, Dan Yeomans, and his 2 IC Albert Coles have been hard at work for the entire week. The judges, Ernie Rose, Al Arnold and Jim Swanson have set their test, a water quad with two retired guns high on a hill, facing north over the pond. Gunning Captains Jane Thompson and Joe Renouf have provided four top-notch two- man gunning crews for the series; Peter Squires and Dave McManus, Lorie Anderson and Gary Wilson, Jim Hiscock and Brian Squires and Joe Renouf with Mac Dunfield.
Test 10 - Water Quad w/ 2 Retired Guns
The test was a water quad with two retired guns. Bird 1 was the longest bird, 260 yards from the line thrown with the wind, to the right, onto a point before retiring. Gun 2 was 150 yards from the line, also thrown right from one island to another. Gun 3, to the left of Gun 1 was 235 yards from the line, thrown with the wind across a bay, before retiring. The go-bird was 70 yards from the line, thrown left, almost on the line to Bird 3.

The test dogs ran at 9:00 AM and required about 25 minutes each. Both retrieved all birds without handling. Test dogs were Cash with Jim Ling and Sloan Of Sweetwater with Ray Smith. The judges prudently took some time to evaluate their test and the wind before giving final approval.
Chairman Dan Yeomans took the opportunity to welcome everyone to Test 10 of the 2008 Canadian National Retriever Championship Stake and to again thank Purina for hosting the on-site breakfast. He also reiterated our thanks to the four major sponsors, Purina, Eukanuba, Tri-tronics and Winchester without whose help and support these National events would not be possible.
At 10:25 AM, John Sellick called the first working dog to the line, #8, FTCH AFTCH
Sally’s South Paw and handler Kevin Cheff. Dan Yeomans introduced each dog and handler as they came to the line. The final series was underway!
The work on this test was excellent, particularly when the degree of difficulty was considered. Dogs 19 and 25 handled which meant that only dogs # 8, 31, 34 and 46 had completed all marking tests without handling. The judges retired to the Ramada after the pictures of the Finalists were taken to make their decision.
The congratulatory dinner and toast was hosted by Purina at HQ. Nelson Spenser, President of the Sunpoke Club thanked his workers, the competitors, sponsors and judges before presenting gifts to the Finalists. Jim Ling, President of the NRCC presented the winner’s trophy and blue ribbon to our new Canadian National Field Trial Champion:
NFTCH NAFTCH FTCH AFTCH FC AFC PRAIRIEMARSH MADNESS, owned by Dennis Voigt and Fiona McKay and handled by Dennis.
Dennis opened the bar!
