The 55th Canadian National Retriever Championship Stake, hosted by The Long Point Retriever Training Club, officially commenced on Saturday September 10 with the hosting of the Judges Banquet.

Over 200 attended the banquet at the Port Rowan Community Center (Field Trial Headquarters) as a delicious supper of Roast Prime Rib was served. Master of Ceremonies, Ted Gadawski, did a wonderful job, keeping everything flowing and everyone entertained and informed.

The head table was introduced and Dennis Voigt, President of the National Retriever Club, welcomed all competitors.

Larry DeLeemans, president of the Long Point Club, presented judges Graham Tyler (West), Harry Steingart (Central) and Gerry Burmaster (East), with gifts of appreciation for all the hard work they have done over the previous few days during set up and the difficult job of selecting a winner at the end of the week.

Larry also presented a special thank you gift to Field Trial Chairman Ron Modesto, who had already received several standing ovations throughout the evening, for all the hard work and time he had dedicated to organizing this years National.

Dennis Voigt gave a brief report on changes occurring during next years Nationals, including a reversal of dates between the National Open and National Amateur Stakes.

Gerry Pozzebon, Head Marshall, gave instructions for Monday morning’s caravan, and announced the first test would be a double with a disappearing gunner and a blind. The major sponsors, Iams, Purina, Tri-Tronics, Dog Afield, Cabela’s, Canadian National Sportsmen Show and Ducks Unlimited Canada were thanked for their continued support and donations. The handlers packages were distributed, which included keeper bibs, donated by Tri-Tronics and numbered hats, donated by Purina.

The evening finished with a lively Calcutta and the starting dog draw. The starting dog will be dog # 41, Deer Ridge Black Talon.
